Product Description
My passion for wine started as a university student, growing up in Adelaide, South Australia where I used to spend weekends visiting cellar doors and picnicking in vineyards with family and friends. After studying oenology at Adelaide University I cut my teeth as a young winemaker at Petaluma, in the Adelaide Hills in the mid 1990’s. My thirst to learn about vineyards and experience other cultures led me to travel and work vintages in Burgundy, the south of France, Argentina and South Africa. I finally landed in Tuscany in 2001 and worked at Tenuta dell’Ornellaia as part of the winemaking team for several years before becoming the manager of a small biodynamic estate on the Tuscan coastline. Eric, my French wine importing husband and right hand man in “Vino di Anna” and I first visited Mt Etna in 2005 searching for some volcanic gems to drink. We were both taken with the old, bush vines of Nerello mascalese growing high on terraces up the north face of the volcano and an idea formed to make wine together. Seven years and two children later, we now own two hectares of Alberello vines, 60 to 100 year plus in age, principally planted with Nerello Mascalese. There are small quantities of Nerello Cappuccino, Alicante (Grenache), Grecianco, Minella and Carricante. We have renovated a 250 year old former wine storage building into a tiny winery where we make our wines. It is located underneath the village of Solicchiata. In the cellar we use no or little sulphur, we use no new oak. Our aim is for minimal handling / intervention. Our wines are bottled without fining or filtration. Exciting times ahead!
Antique crimson colour, wafts gentle aromas of bruised strawberries, morello cherries and balsam. It has very appealing sapidity in the mouth reminiscent of cranberry and pomegranate before revealing background terroir notes of pepper, roast bay, mushroom and cooked earth.
