A blend of three different types of whiskey—malt whiskey, grain whiskey, and a third component which is said to be a malt whiskey produced from crystal malt. It’s rich texture suggests a decent malt content for a blend. Layers of sweetness (honeyed vanilla, rummy molasses, toasted marshmallow) are balanced by toasted nuts, dried fruit, and dark chocolate. Very dynamic and with plenty of grit.

For their 18-year-old whiskey, Jameson mingles pot still and grain whiskies, ages the blend in Sherry cask then finishes it in first-fill bourbon barrels. The mellow result shows aromas of spice, toffee and apricot followed by flavours of fudge and Sherry nuttiness. A lasting finish, pair with toffee apple cake.

Jameson Crested is a triple-distilled Irish blended whiskey containing a high percentage of rich pot still Irish whiskey, I believe around 60% and the remaining 40% of the whiskey is made up of Irish grain whiskey. The whiskey has been matured in a high proportion of sherry casks, as well as bourbon barrels.

Like Tullamore D.E.W. Original, Tullamore D.E.W. 12 year old Special Reserve is a triple distilled blend of all three types of Irish whiskey. However, it has a high proportion of pot still and malt whiskeys, matured in a combination of bourbon and sherry casks, for 12 to 15 years. A very fine aged whiskey with great complexity.

The early floral yet biscuit flavour reflects the grain whiskey, while the soft spicy notes can be attributed to the pot still whiskey in the blend. The citrus flavour is contributed by the malt. Finally notice the nutty or even marzipan note combined with distinctive vanilla in the finish – imparted by the sherry and bourbon casks used in maturation.
