Product Description
The phoenix or fire bird, often represented with a scarlet and golden plumage, is an ancient mythological creature that has appeared in several cultures as a symbol of rebirth, immortality, and renewal. Thelema Mountain Vineyards are an outstanding illustration of South Africa’s recent wine renaissance. Gyles and Barbara Webb’s beautiful farm is in the Helshoogte Pass, tucked into the southern folds of the Simonsberg, in the Stellenbosch region, and is home to a superbly efficient, modern cellar. In July 1983 the McLean Family Trust bought the old fruit farm Thelema, this purchase was the culmination of a long search by Gyles and Barbara Webb for that rare location where exceptional wines could be made, for this was their sole intention. A winery was completed five years later, and almost immediately, his wines were among the best the country had to offer. Gyles was influenced in his wine–making by visits to Tuscany, Bordeaux and California. Gyles Webb is a former accountant turned winemaker with vision and flair and has helped Thelema to grow from ramshackle fruit orchards into a South African success story.
Name-giving herbaceous note prominent but in harmony with serious fruit on big, impressive wine whose power doesn’t preclude charm. Concentrated cassis, mocha and dark chocolate flavours spring to the fore, with a distinctive fresh mint character on the long finish.
