The liqueur comes with a 200-year-old pedigree. Its secret recipe, a blend of over 20 botanicals, was first formulated by a Czech apothecary and a British-born doctor way back in 1807 in a quest to create a healthful “elixir of life.” As is the case with most herbal liqueurs, Becherovka’s not for all tastes. But if you like your drinks bittersweet, complex, and a little spicy, you’ll want to give this cinnamon, clove, and ginger-accented liqueur a try.
The 12 ingredients used are Japanese Sencha Tea, Chinese green tea and then Seville orange peel, grapefruit peel, lemon peel, juniper, coriander seed, liquorice, angelica root, almond and orris root. It is called Beefeater 24 because the botanicals are steeped in the spirit for a full 24 hours.
This works as a sipping spirit, without a doubt and the influence of the oak, is restrained and perfectly balanced.
There is a strong juniper lead that one expects from the distillery’s core DNA, with a more pronounced resinous and viscous element in this gin compared to the usual Beefeater Gin. There is a huge intensity of flavour in Crown Jewel Gin with both the bouquet and taste being well rounded and heavy. It’s a bold gin and delivers a delicious journey that harnesses the full spectrum of essences in the ten botanicals.
Based on James Burrough’s original 19th century recipe, the botanicals in Beefeater gin are steeped for 24 hours prior to distillation resulting in a complex, yet perfectly balanced gin of depth & integrity. Wild juniper combines with the subtle spice of coriander & the citrus freshness of lemons & Seville oranges for a vibrant gin suitable for every occasion.
