The bouquet has a bit of a swagger, warm spice almost nutmeg notes with an aromatic floral top notes and an herbal sweetness – confident and very pleasing. The gin definitely has the citrus bitter hop notes that will be familiar to a beer lover. The lead is citrus sweet, a juniper and hoppy bitterness then grabs the palate, and swirling underneath is a rounded almost licorice like sweetness. This gin is unlike any other we have tasted.

Citadelle is distilled in these Cognac pot stills over a naked flame, making it the only gin that uses this technique. Distilling gin on an open flame requires a deft touch and far more attention than a column still or steam distillation which is otherwise used. The naked flame concentrates flavors and releases more essential oils, giving Citadelle a creamier texture and bigger mouthful.

Most gin is intended to be drank in cocktails. And Citadelle Reserve makes a great cocktail. But it’s also excellent when enjoyed by itself over ice. The key here is that the gin is barrel aged after distillation, giving the finished product a softer, warmer flavor.

Derived from a recipe rediscovered in the Boudier archives, Saffron Gin is made from the finest natural botanicals. In addition to the saffron which gives a delicately spicy character, the recipe has juniper, coriander, lemon, orange Peel, angelica seeds, iris and fennel, creating one of the most complex and memorable gins distilled today.

While the base botanicals consist of juniper, citrus, orris root, angelica root and coriander, it’s the Provençal twist containing a variety of herbs such as bay, thyme and rosemary, alongside the neutral grape spirit and base distillate of Mirabeau Classic Rosé, that really makes this gin stand out from the crowd. The result is fruity and textured, with lemon, coriander and citrus bursting with floral notes, rose petals and lavender. The story ends on a final note as those herbs add an extra kick of character to the blend.
