Wairau River (pronounced why-ra-ow) produces wines exclusively sourced from our family estate vineyards first established in 1978 by Phil & Chris Rose. With five estate vineyards of around 500 acres, Wairau River Wines can maintain total commitment to quality. Wairau River is one of the largest independent wine estates in Marlborough, and the range of elegant wines is characteristically expressive of its Marlborough roots. Hand tended in small batches from vine to bottle, low crops and ultra ripe fruit are utilised to produce premium wine that has become renowned for exhibiting intense fruit characteristics and classical elegance – and the beauty of this is that we nurture the wines from the smallest shoot on the vine to the bottle. Everything is done by us, hands on. In the vineyards Phil and Hamish Rose take care to keep yields low to ensure the fruit ripens perfectly (in the shallow soil with low fertility which gives rise to such concentrated flavours). Once the fruit is picked and brought in to the winery in small parcels, each distinctive block is matched to its own tank, allowing the small batch vintning that is the key to building all the elements of the Wairau River blend. It goes without saying that only the best grapes go into our flagship Wairau River label.
The Reserve Pinot Noir provides dark fruits entwined with savoury richness and toasty French oak. The complexity of the nose continues through the palate revealing generous fruit weight and mocha nuances delivered with a refined texture and a persistent finish.
