Product Description
The Balvenie distillery in Dufftown was built in 1892 by W. & J. Grant, owners of the Glenfiddich distillery nearby. More than a century later they are still ‘sister stills’, owned by the very same company that originally built them. When the distillery was built in 1892 it was outfitted with second-hand still from Lagavulin and Glen Albyn. This might seem a bit odd at first, but the use of second hand stills is actually not that uncommon. These days Balvenie has no less than eight stills.
Robust. Confident. As you would expect a 21 year old to be. A whisky, that is! The port finish comes through on the back of remarkably balanced cocoa beans and fruit cake wrapped in chewy toffee. Then there is the sweet beeswax complemented by gorgeous red apples and a teasing cinnamon spice. And grapes. Lots of grapes. Dark grapes. The palate is beautifully textured. Must be all that cocoa, thick grapes and warm apple stew covered in salty nuts. The finish is long and seductive. The cinnamon fruitcake is back and renders you almost incapacitated. This is truly an example of what real magic must feel like.
