Product Description
Varela Hermanos S.A. has a history that dates back to 1908 when Don José Varela Blanco, a young Spanish immigrant, launches the Ingenio San Isidro in the town of Pesé, the first sugar mill in the then recently formed Republic of Panama. The town of Pesé, established in the middle of the XVIII century, is located in a fertile valley in the middle of Panama, where the main commercial activity of its near 10,000 inhabitants is the cultivation of sugarcane. In 1936, agreeing to the wishes of his 3 eldest sons, José Manuel, Plinio and Julio, Don José begins the distillation of sugarcane juice for the elaboration of liqueurs, and was distinguished from the start for products of extraordinary quality. Since then, Varela Hermanos S.A. has maintained a leadership position in the liqueur industry of Panama, and today they produce approximately one million boxes a year. Today, almost a century after Don José started operations in Pesé, a third generation that follows the same family traditions runs Varela Hermanos S.A., Panama’s main liqueur industry. With a solid production infrastructure and the passion and dedication of all the personnel that works in the company, we prepare ourselves for an even greater presence in the international market as exporters of fine liqueurs and rums.
Centuria, from the Latin ‘centum’ meaning one hundred, is the name we have chosen for this unique product, as we celebrate a century of rum-making tradition. Its complex aroma and flavor comes from a blend of the finest rums from our oldest reserves, aged in white oak barrels for up to 30 years. These select rums then become part of our ‘Reserva de la Familia. Deep copper color. Bold bourbon barrel aromas of banana butter cream, caramelized pecan, figs, and creme brulée with a satiny, fruity medium-full body and a long, cascading waves of honeyed dried mango, tobacco, cola, and brown spice on the finish.
