Product Description
With a history of wine-making excellence expanding more than 115 years, Paternina is one of the few pre-phylloxera wineries in Rioja. In 1896, D.Federico Paternina Josué founded the Paternina Wineries in Ollauri, a group of three wineries with around a thousand American oak barrels; in 1922 they took over the bodegas of the Catholic Farming Syndicate Co-operative in Haro. In 1984, the company was taken over by Riojan entrepreneur Marcos Eguizábal Ramírez. Today, thanks to winemaker Carlos Estecha’s exceptional talent and some astute commercial choices Paternina is one of the leading Rioja wineries. Well-equipped cellars incorporate some of the latest technology along with tried and tested practices while the vast barrel ageing cellar has been described as a ‘cathedral of wine’ and contains nearly 50,000 barrels of gently ageing wine. The company is owned by the Eguizábal family, which acquired Paternina and is credited with expanding the reputation of not only the winery, but also the Rioja appellation itself.
Medium cherry red colour and typical Rioja aromas of cherry, raspberry, musk and exotic spices. Medium bodied with cherry, damson and soft fruit flavours and a touch of vanilla. Lovely texture and weight with delicate tannins, fine structure and lingering, aromatic finish.
