McHenry Hohnen is owned by the McHenry and Hohnen families, sourcing grapes from four vineyards owned by various members of the families. Vines have been established on the McHenry, Calgardup Brook, Rocky Road and McLeod Creek properties. A significant part of the grape production is sold to others (including Cape Mentelle). The family members with direct executive responsibilities are leading Perth retailer Murray McHenry and Cape Mentelle founder and former long-term winemaker David Hohnen. The McHenry Hohnen intention is to shape wines with verve and vitality. This is done by embracing a ‘hands-off’ winemaking philosophy, where each wine is a focussed expression of its variety, its growing season and its individual site. Viticultural practices embrace old-school holistic farming philosophies and biodynamic practices which cultivate an environment where the soil and its organisms, along with plants, insects and animals, co-exist in a thriving equilibrium. McHenry Hohnen’s vineyards are managed using 100% biodynamic methods which are designed to improve the vitality and health of the soil – thereby improving plant health and dramatically improving the plant’s resistance to pests and disease. McHenry Hohnen’s vineyard manager Mike Sleegers is an experienced advocate of biodynamic farming and claims its the ‘only way’ to grow the best quality grapes. Natural composts and manure teas are made onsite, no chemicals are used and in the main, lunar cycles are observed in administering the biodynamic regimes. As Mike says – A better environment gives you better wine.
Aromas of sweet grilled peaches, butterscotch and lanolin leap from the glass. Delving deeper sweet and savoury notes of peanut brittle and wet slate can be found. A complex and textural palate reveals layers of stone-fruits, grilled nuts and preserved Meyer lemons. Finishing sweet and long with flavours of salted caramel and custard powder spice.
