Product Description
Alana has worked in the wine industry since 2002 with winemaking experience in New Zealand, Australia, France and Italy. She began her career working at a winery called Marlborough Valley Cellars. During the four years she spent with this company, she worked under some of the finest winemakers in New Zealand including Kim Crawford, Simon Waghorn and Matt Thomson. Throughout these years, Alana was also travelling to Sicily to work with Cantina Firriato. Alana continues to travel to Italy each year to work on various projects, including Alpha Zeta. In 2005 Alana joined the team at Kiwi-Oeno, a winemaking consultancy company based in Marlborough and owned by Matt Thomson. She has recently launched the first vintage of her solo venture, Lani Wines in Marlborough, with a Gewurztraminer. Seeing different varieties from different areas and climates is part of the buzz of winemaking for Alana, and she loves the challenge of translating the potential of the fruit on the vines into wine.
Brilliant, light straw-yellow colour, lighter on rim. This has a very fine, but deeply concentrated bouquet redolent of rose-petals and Turkish Delight along with subtle notes of spice and flinty lees-like elements. Off-dry to taste, this has good depth and concentration of red florals with hints of exotic tropical fruits and complexing herbs, building with richness on palate to show some unctuousness. The palate is soft and rounded, the phenolic handling excellent, and the acidity quite restrained, but sufficient for tension and poise. The wine finishes with moderate length, showing an attractive floral purity and some sweetness. This is a classically elegant Gewurztraminer with subtle exotic fruitiness and balanced richness.
