The beautiful and modern city of Melbourne sits at the top (north) end of Port Phillip, and the bay of Port Phillip has the Mornington Peninsula on its south eastern edge. The Mornington Peninsula is considered a cooler region, given its latitude so far south, at least by Australian standards. The Mornington Peninsula is a fairly small piece of land with a fairly large number of wineries, many of which specialize in cooler climate wines. Kooyong Wines is a specialist Pinot Noir and Chardonnay producer which we think are the ideal varieties to be planted for what is Australia’s foremost cool climate maritime wine growing region. We are passionate about our biological viticultural practices and sensitive minimalist winemaking which produces site expressive wines of elegance, complexity and structure. The vineyard and winery were established in 1996 and is owned and operated by the Gjergja family. The winemaker is Glen Hayley. The majority of the 40 hectare site is planted to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay with a small block of Pinot Gris. We are passionate about our biological viticultural practices and sensitive minimalist winemaking which produces site expressive wines of elegance, complexity and structure.
Dark ruby in colour. The bouquet shows cherry, blackberry and beetroot with a pungent floral quality gaining strength with air. Sappy, penetrating bitter cherry and dark berry skin flavors show very good depth and a smoky, floral quality. A distinctly powerful Pinot with impressive chewy persistence and resonating sweetness on the finish.
