Product Description
Glen Carlou has an interesting story and is currently one of the Cape’s top producers of Chardonnay and reds. The 108 acre farm was purchased by Walter Finlayson in 1985 and is located in the northern foothills of the Simonsberg Mountains between Paarl and Stellenbosch. Walter was the only person to be named Diner’s Club Winemaker of the year for two years. He began working for his father as a winemaker at age 23 at Hartenberg in Stellenbosch, then owned by his father. Walter studied winemaking techniques in France, Germany, USA, Chile, Portugal, Spain and Switzerland. Later Walter spent ten years rehabilitating Blaauwklippen (located in the Helderberg area of Stellenbosch) where he renovated the facilities and where he earned the reputation as an innovative, talented and highly regarded wine maker. Prior to purchasing Glen Carlou it had been in a deeply neglected state and Walter transformed the farm into what was to become a leading wine producer. The local papers wrote about this transformation as a phoenix rising from the ashes – seldom had anything of this magnitude been seen before in South African wine history.
Exciting aromas of bramble fruit and spice are beautifully complemented by hints of mulberry and chocolate. On the palate a medley of strawberry and raspberry is subtly complemented by well-integrated oak.
