When the saxophonist John Coltrane split with Miles Davis in the late 50s, he wasted little time releasing his visionary Giant Steps album. Owner Phil Sexton is a jazz fan and was inspired by the album and Coltrane’s foresight. When he sold his Devil’s Lair vineyard in Margaret River to relocate and replant in the Yarra Valley, he named his wine in Coltrane’s honour. Giant Steps is a premium Yarra Valley outfit founded by Phil Sexton located in the in the township of Healesville. Since appointing Steve Flamsteed as his head winemaker and eventual business partner, Sexton and Flamsteed have developed a reputation for producing some of the region’s finest examples of single vineyard wines. From the vineyard to the final bottled wine, every aspect of the Giant Steps process is geared towards making truly world-class wine. The focus is on what the Yarra does best – Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Shiraz/Syrah and Bordeaux-variety blends – and showcasing the unique terroirs of some of the region’s finest vineyards. Giant Steps has forged a reputation for delivering some of Australia’s most consistent, over-performing, varietal wines.
Delicate lemon zest and ginger aromas are supported by a flinty minerality. Though the wine has seen oak it is very restrained, showing just a hint of roasted hazelnuts, toast and smoke. The palate is savoury, well-integrated and beautifully defined with crisp acidity on the finish.
