The Gianoli family immigrated from Italy and homesteaded the ranch in 1882, planting 20 acres of Zinfandel. Reachable only by miles of old dirt road winding through dense forests of Redwood and Douglas fir, the 75-acre ranch sits at an elevation of about 1,900 feet, which almost always places it well above the thick fogs below. In 1963, Dr. Donald Edmeades, a Pasadena cardiologist, planted grapes in the tiny hamlet of Philo, in the Anderson Valley, making him the first modern-day grower to do so in that remote stretch of western Mendocino County. His son, Deron, began Edmeades Winery in 1972. It quickly gained a reputation not only for Anderson Valley-grown wines, but for lusty, mountain Zinfandels that won gold medals and earned high scores from critics. In fact, Edmeades helped launch the fame of these intense, hillside Mendocino Zins. In 1988, Edmeades was purchased by Jess Jackson, making it one of the first wineries to join the Jackson Family Wines portfolio. Using grapes grown in Mendocino County’s rugged coastal mountains, Edmeades crafts bold, intense Zinfandels of distinctive character and personality. We work side by side with a small group of growers, who year after year produce some of Mendocino County’s most highly-prized grapes.
Lots of earthiness and dark brooding aromas that are not often found in Zinfandel. Deep raspberries, cassis and creamy oak embody an old-world funkiness of smoked meats, cedar box and forest. This is a powerhouse wine: concentrated and intense — a dark, brooding beast of a wine.
