Passarella is an award-winning gem of a winery located in the most ancient quality producing region of Portugal, the Dão The Casa was founded even before the region acquired its DOC status, way back in 1892 and boasting a rich history. The flagship wine, Villa Oliviera, is named after the man who founded the estate almost 150 years ago. Portugal-born Amand d’Oliveira made his fortune in Brazil and returned to his homeland where he lived out his dream, by building a huge Brazilian style house and planting up 200 hectares of vines. Its birth may have been illustrious but, when current owner Ricardo Cabral acquired it in 2007, the winery was in ruins. Cabral proceeded to rebuild the winery and the vineyard, and was lucky to take on winemaker Paulo Nunes in 2009. Paulo saw opportunity in the location of the vineyard, where the Serra d’Estrela’s higher altitude (400-600m) results in 20 days longer hang times, great for tannin ripeness with more acidity and freshness, giving the wines a unique sense of place. The Label – It is said that one day a sculptor got the look stuck in a known phenomenon of nature: a peacock displayed its majestic mantle of feathers, just to draw attention of the female and satiate his prohibited desires. The show was so splendid, that two days later the artist had already carved a piece based on what he had seen. He gave it the name fan. In order to survive, he also gave it a simple use. And fans started reproducing throughout fashions, people, palaces, operas and seasons, as an essential adornment. But the world would always use the fan to expel heat, never to hold it within themselves. The world, except one woman: Teresa. Teresa had always been a shy and reserved girl, but at her 21st birthday she received a secret gift, a letter and a fan from an admirer, a nobleman who lived in Seville. In the letter, he offered her the absolute, and in return only asked her to always sleep with the fan really close. At the moment that she held the fan for the first time, Teresa became an Empress. Every night she dreamed about strange peacocks satiating their prohibited desires.
A big, ripe and rich wine, whose tannins are so well integrated into the bold, black fruits. The wine has weight, concentration and dark plum flavors that are spiced from wood aging, this has a distinctly structured and dense finish.
