Product Description
Long before the Santa Maria Valley benchland was recognized as a great winegrowing region, the native Chumash Indians knew it as “tepuztli,” meaning copper coin. Later, Spanish settlers translated the word as Tepusquet. Proprietor Barbara Banke acquired a large portion of the original Tepusquet Vineyard (planted between 1970 and 1971) in 1986 to serve as the site for Cambria winery. Over the last two decades the vineyard has been expanded, replanted and updated with new clones and rootstocks to take advantage of the unique climatic and geological conditions of the Santa Maria Bench. The decision to farm Cambria’s estate vineyards sustainably is a natural one. It’s not often that a process is as practical as it is principled, but nurturing the land that sustains us not only makes perfect sense, we think it makes better wine. Producing world-class wines that embody the spirit and character of this special place is at the core of our business, and our commitment to sustainable farming and preserving the land for future generations provides the framework for our practices.
The Benchbreak Chardonnay opens with lively fruit and oak spice aromas. The palate reveals citrus, pineapple, white peach and apple flavors that carry through the mid-palate and into the fresh, clean finish.
