Hemel-en-Aarde is Afrikaans for “heaven and earth” and the claim is justified. Our estate sits on a particularly heavenly stretch of land beneath a lofty peak of the Babylon’s Tower mountain range. In addition to its unrelenting beauty, Ataraxia is home to some of the most spectacular terroirs South Africa has to offer. In 2004, The Skyfields Farm was visioned into the Ataraxia wine label when husband and wife, Kevin and Hanli Grant and a few friends purchased this 47-hectare prime vineyard property. The name ATARAXIA is a term used to describe emotional tranquillity or in more expanded terms, the freedom from disturbance that characterises a balanced mind and constitutes its first step towards the achievement of pleasure. More than a decade later, we are associated with crafting wines of incredible finesse, balance and depth; wines that proudly hold their own on the international wine stage.
A finely scented, vibrant bouquet with hints of dark berry fruit and intriguing mineral and spicy notes characterise this wine. Mouth-watering and deeply ripe and polished grape tannins are wrapped in an elegant structure that subtly occupies all corners of ones palate. Assertive, classic and lingering, it reflects the grasp of style and deft hand of its maker. There’s plenty of Syrah there, giving dark, cool fruit, spiced by some savoury Sangiovese perhaps. Full-flavoured but elegant on the finish.
