Product Description
Located in the spectacular Galician region of Ribeira Sacra, the hard work starts in the vineyard. The Algueira winery is located in the midst of old chestnut and oak tree forests,on the banks of the river Sil, where the monks built their monasteries back in the 12th Century, A scenario which reflects the calm and peacefulness necessary for the creation of our wines. We bet on autonomous varieties, and we base our production entirely on grapes from our own vineyards which are located on the banks of the River Sil, which benefit from the exceptional micro-climate conditions for the production of first grade quality grapes. Our first aim is to highlight quality over quantity, thereby creating a genuine wine which is sure to please the palates of wine lovers. The winery makes a few Mencia-based Ribeira Sacra wines starting with a beautiful, easy drinking wines, and working up to others that see some aging in (mostly) seasoned oak barrels. They also make tiny quantities of wines from several rare indigenous varieties, in both red and white. To compose these masterpieces, they began work with the famous Raul Perez as the “spiritual” guiding winemaker. They further carry the biodynamic baton in the winery and use foot treading of grapes and spontaneous fermentations to make these pure, natural, mineral-laden and beautifully textured wines. Algueira’s Ribeira Sacras are all special wines, not to mention incredible values given the work involved to produce them. They deserve a place in the pantheon of unique and soulful wines from one of the great and largely undiscovered terroirs in the wine world, they are the musical chords we use to compose our masterpieces. The orientation of our vines, the microclimate, growing them on slopes looking towards the river, as well as the special care we take with our vineyards in search of low stock yield are the biggest secrets to our success.
A lovely wine that shows fine ripeness, with plenty of red fruit in evidence on both the bouquet and palate. The very refined bouquet wafts from the glass in a mix of red berries, pomegranate, graphite, a touch of tree bark, woodsmoke, a beautifully complex dollop of botanicals and a fine base of granitic soil tones. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and nicely transparent, with fine intensity of flavor, bright acidity, excellent focus and grip and a long, modestly tannic and complex finish.
